Help With Page 1
Once you are logged in...
Simply select the main category of the legal professional the record is about and the geographical area in which they operate or practice. You do this with two simple drop-down boxes. When you have made your selections simply click the NEXT button.
Some more details follow.
The Categories Box: There are currently five main categories...
|
"Judge" is anyone in that capacity, in any type of Court, Civil or Criminal and includes full or part-time Magistrate, District Judge etc.
|
"Barrister" is any similar advocate regardless of specialisation, qualifications or seniority, including QC.
|
"Solicitor" is any practising solicitor from Senior Partner to junior, Independent Practitioner to Company employee.
|
"Official" is anyone in office including Law Society Staff, Bar Council Employees, Court Officials etc.
|
"Other" is anyone else - eg. Legal Executives, non-practising solicitors etc. |
If I need to improve these categories / options please email me
The Area Box: There are currently 11 geographical areas to choose from...
|
Scotland covers all of Scotland
|
Northern Ireland | |
|
Ireland covers all of southern Ireland
England & Wales is split into seven areas to match the Court Circuits. North East England, North West England, The Midlands, London, South East England, South West England and Wales & Cheshire. You do not need to be exact if you live near a border - the record can be searched by name, postcode, town, county etc. - but please indicate the general area
International covers the rest of the world. Note that there is an extra box an the address field (page 2) to list the country. |
Notes: We really only cover the British Isles. The main reason for including southern Ireland is that some of the worst horror stories seem to come from there and things are apparently even worse than they are in the UK see here. Scotland too, it seems, has more than it's fair share of "legal" crooks. Many other countries have similar problems and lumping the rest of the world together under "international" may seem like an insult. It's not intended that way but it's hard to see (at this stage) how we can better serve something we know next-to-nothing about. Please do feel free to list here, use the Overseas Visitors forum and drop us a line. If this section GROWS we can probably think of something better.
Help With Page 2
At the top of this page we ask for the gender of the person this record is about. Again, a simple drop-down box is used for this purpose. This information is required.
Next we ask for a sub-category - i.e. the type of judge, whether a solicitor is a partner - anything that might help. This is not absolutely essential but is useful. This information varies slightly depending upon the main category. Please do NOT guess if you are unsure. Some pages contain research links if you want to use them.
The name and address should present few problems... and that's IT for page 2... and really that's the basic record almost complete. Please check over the information given and then click the LAST button when done.
Notes: You may see some links on the Form such as Research or Court Lists depending upon the main category and area chosen on page 1. These link to specific bits of our main Research Page which opens in a new window. The links there are of varying quality but can be helpful. For example, following the Court Lists link takes you to the list of Court Locators which can provide the address and post code of the court - for England and Wales this is a very good link - less good (but possibly still serviceable) for other areas. Another example, if the Main Category is "Solicitor" the link to the Law Society dataBase can be followed and you can search for the solicitor or Firm to check the correct name spelling, the address and postcode.
Help With Page 3
FIRST - Please check over the information already supplied (shown near the top of the page). Use your browser's BACK button to return you to Page 2 to make any corrections and then click LAST again to return to Page 3. If the Main Category is wrong, use the BACK button and then click START OVER
NEXT Use the Radio buttons to indicate whether or not you have personal experience of this legal professional.
I
have information to share -
select if you have experience of this individual **
I
am only seeking information - select
if you have NO personal experience
** Personal experiences includes instructing this individual, meeting with them, corresponding with them, talking on the phone etc.
Finally we ask if your experience (or opinion) is "Good", "Neutral" or "Bad". This information (if given, the default is Neutral) is used in our "Member Rating" statistics (see notes below) - otherwise a "Neutral" (zero) rating is recorded against your entry. We also record a "Neutral" rating if you said "I am only seeking information" in response to the question above. Once again you use simple Radio Buttons to answer this question...
Neutral,
Mixed or No opinion
Good,
Very Good or Excellent
Bad, Very
Bad or Appalling
As a final security check we ask you to enter your password before clicking the ALL DONE button.
Assuming your password is correct (i.e. matches your Username) you are DONE :-) You will be taken to the new record (Calling Card) where you can view your entry. Follow the links and instructions there if you want to add external links (these will be vetted before they become part of the final record) or to link this record to others.
Please note: the Member Ratings are NOT to be regarded (on their own) as an indicator of whether a legal professional is good, bad or a mixture. LegalXchange does NOT make recommendations or otherwise. The "ratings" are there purely to assist other Members in gauging the type of information they may be likely to receive. If anything, an exceptionally high or low "rating" is even more reason to ask - that's why we're all here... to eXchange information.
